In the 1851 Census, he, his wife, and their child Mary Jane were living with his wife's widowed mother and her family on Wentworth Street and then on Queen Street. In 1852 or 1853, John and Ann rented a house on Portland Street, Sheffield, and brought all the children back to their household.
