He was the son of Benjamin Leonard 1761 (MA)-1830 and Eva Burget 1770-1830, grandson of Benjamin Leonard and Mary Reneffe (Renough) of the Solomon Leonard line. Alternative: he is the son of Leonard Leonard, but there's no documentation to support that and available information supports his being a son of Benjamin.

He died of apoplexy.
