Origins may be difficult to track. A Lt. General Monnier of Paris, France, died as reported by the Providence American April 19, 1816 -- perhaps he was here during the American Revolution and that stimulated a child or grandchild to emigrate. Also, a Maria Louisa Monier died October 5, 1857 at the age of 99 years, 2 months, as reported in the New York Post of October 6, 1857, Those two plus Jenny were the only Monniers the NEHGS data base had.

A Francois Monner arrived Sept. 13, 1847, age 40, in New York, departed from Le Havre, on the ship May Flower. His place of origin is listed as Switzerland. A Margaret Monnier, born in 1814 in Ireland, was living in Pittsfield at the 1870 Census. Another wife?

A Francis X. Monnier, 1831-1912, is listed in the New York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America by George C. Groce and David H. Wallace, New Haven: Yale, 1957. Son by a previous marriage?

A Josephine Monnier, 50, arrived August 20, 1834, from Havre, France, on the ship Florida, accompanied by Marie Monnier, 38,spinster. He was a farmer headed for Ohio, as was she.
