was the first attorney and theonly one until 1738. "His assistance in the
defence in criminalprosecutions was much sought after, and his abilities were
never moreconspicuous than in those defenses." He was many times elected
aselectman, moderator, and representative to the General Court. Duringthe latter
part of his life, his mind was obscured. ECL sayshe lost hismind at about the
age of 43. During the term of the Court of CommonPleas 1755-1760, his wife Elizabeth
and his son Elkanah were appointedhis guardians, as he was "non compos mentis."
