He died on 5 March 1841 at the age of 78 in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA.36 He was buried in New Lenox Cemetery, Lenox, MA. He and his twin brother Jabez both served in the Revolutionary War. Joseph served in General Washington's army. One of his assignments there was to guard the spy Major Andre before he was executed. Andre was improsoned at Tappan, New York. On September 29, 1780, he was found guilty of being behind American lines "under a feigned name and in a disguised habit." Andre was hanged as a spy at noon on October 2, 1780. Joseph stated on his Revolutionary War pension application that he was born on the 29th of January 1762 in Barnstable, MA, and remained there until April 1774, when he removed to Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA. In February 1788 he moved to Poultney, Rutland Co., VT, and remained there till February 1796, when he removed to Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA. On the 24th day of June 1780 he was drafted from Lenox for a period of 6 months. File No. 29,235. Joseph was in Rutland County, Vermont for the 1790 census. Son, Joseph Jr., was born in Vermont, possibly Rutland. Tombstone: Died aged 80 years. "Because I live ye shall live also." 25. Lois HAMLIN37 was born on 9 July 1770 in New Concord, NY.38 She died on 15 February 1837 at the age of 66 in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA.39 She was buried in New Lenox Cemetery, Lenox, MA.
