He died on 4 January 1857 at the age of 75 in Salem, Dent County, MO. He was born in Wilmington during the Revolutionary War as the British were occupying the town. He is listed in the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Iredell (formerly Rowan) Co., NC. He is also listed in land records in Iredell Co. from 1816. He sold his land in Iredell in 1831 Robert began moving his family west in 1832. The group moving west appeared to include several Iredell Co. families who appear together in Crawford and surrounding counties in 1840, such as Leonard, Waggoner, Troutman, Shultz, Wingfield, etc. They apparently stopped in Tennessee in 1832, when Esther Leonard was born. In 1833 Robert's farm/land claim on Spring Creek in Dent County, MO, was listed in 1838. In 1833 it was in Crawford County, a part of which was later formed into Dent County in 1851. The Dent County Historical Society credits Robert with being one of the first settlers. He lived in an area near what was later called Salem. The first school in the area was the Leonard school. Robert LEONARD and Esther WINGFIELD were married on 3 November 1801 in Wilmington, New Hanover Co., NC. Or was her name Williams? Esther WINGFIELD was born in 1779 in North Carolina. She died about 1821 at the age of 42 in North Carolina. Robert LEONARD and Esther WINGFIELD had the following children:
