Seventh Generation


1552. Col. Samuel Haven LEONARD173,174 was born on 10 July 1825 in Bolton, MA. He joined the Worcester Guards in 1845 as a private at age 20. He rose through nearly all of the intermediate offices to the rank of Brigadier General. He was in command of the Fifth Brigade of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia for several years. He was commander of the Thirteenth Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers at the beginning of the Civil War and fought in many campaigns, beginning with Cedar Mountain 9 August 1862. Col. Leonard was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg 1 July 1863.

He was one of the proprietors of Leonards Express prior to the Civil War.

Col. Samuel Haven LEONARD and Lucy E. PUTNAM were married on 4 January 1849. Lucy E. PUTNAM175 was born in West Newton, MA.
