First Generation

1. Job Strong LEONARD was born about 1740 in Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA. This is the birth date estimate in DAR records. Other estimates: ca. 1754, CT. Not sure Lenox was available to settlement until 1750. He died in 1821 at the age of 81 in Granville, Washington Co., NY. Or was he born in 1740 in Lenox, MA? Did he marry (2) Susanna? There appear to be at least 5 daughters missing. Did he have a brother named Timothy?

A Job Leonard of Lenox was a private in Col. Henry Sherburne's regt., Continental pay accounts for service from 5 Apr 1777 to 4 Apr 1780; residence, Lenox; reported discharge; also, Capt. Joshua Trafton's co., Col. Sherburne's regt.; muster roll dated Camp Middel Town, 21 Aug 1778. DAR credits Capt. Trafton's record. He was a member of the Green Mountain Boys and fought at Bennington, Ticonderoga, and Crown Point.

A history related to Job's son Henry states that Henry was the youngest son of Col. Job Leonard of Norton, Bristol Co., MA, and that Col. Leonard was on the staff of General Gates at the battle of Saratoga and perhaps in the action at Bennington that preceded it. There were two Col. Leonards. One, Col. David Leonard of West Springfield, MA, was a Lt. Col. in Col. Ruggles Woodbridge's regt. and may have taken part in that engagement. Another was Nathaniel Leonard, a major, then Lt. Col., in Col. Timothy Walker's regt. Note that Job Strong Leonard married Betsy, the daughter of Col. Timothy Walker. Several Rev. War soldiers listed service in Col. Leonard's regt. (but which Col. Leonard?) at Ticonderoga. This is all very confusing and requires additional research.

The "History of Poultney, VT" mentions Deacon Job Leonard on page 222. The Boughton family is mentioned on this and the preceding page. John Boughton, Jr., b 1754, d. 31 May 1811, Poultney. His widow, Lucy Perkins Broughton, married Deacon Job Leonard of Granville NY. Check this out!

A Job Leonard is listed in Becket, Berkshire Co., MA, in the 1790 Census, family of 5 females, 2 males, one of which is under 16. In 1800, what appears to be the same Job is in Granville, NY, with a family of 4 males and 5 females. In 1810, Job, still in Granville, has a household of 3 males and 5 females.

Job Leonard was appointed 2nd deacon in 1802 in Granville, NY.

Administration of estate of Job Leonard of Granville, Washington Co., NY granted to Henry Leonard 27 Feb 1822 (WashCW LA III:99).

There appear to be 12 family trees in ancestry.com relating to Job Strong Leonard and Addison Leonard, but there are many contradictions and things that would need the logic explained in the trees that make them questionable. None of the trees extend down to the current day. One current male descendant has been tested in haplogroup R1b. It would be useful to fill out the tree and also identify more current direct male descendants who could be tested.

There's a Simeon Leonard, born abt. 1786 in VT, also living in Winhall, where the rest of this Leonard family was living.

Middle names didn't really come into vogue until after 1775. Why does Job Strong Leonard sport one?

Elizabeth "Betsy" WALKER, daughter of Timothy WALKER, was born in 1750. She died in 1820 at the age of 70. Was she Elizabeth "Betsy" Robbins Walker?
