John was born on the homestead farm, educated in the district schools, worked on the farm as a boy, and came to Syracuse as a youth.

John Alexander LEONARD and Louisa SLOAN were married on 31 December 1835. Louisa SLOAN⁶⁸⁵, daughter of Kellogg Bement SLOAN and Mary Allen GAYLORD, died on 27 November 1855 in Syracuse, NY. She was born in Sharon Springs, NY.
