Leonard built a large foundry on Wales street and removed from Whittenton in 1865, continuing the business until his death in 1876. In 1877, the Leonard Co-operative Foundry Company was organized in 1877 and reorganized in 1891 under the name of the New England Stove Company. He was commissioned captain of a cavalry company, but had no wartime service. He was a member of the legislature for one term. He was chosen a deacon of the 1st Congregational Church.
