He was with his father in the foundry. In 1868 he built a larger factory on Wales Street, which he continued until his death in 1891 when it became the Leonard Co-operative Foundry Co. In 1891 it wassold to the New England Stove Co. The Babbitt Genealogy says: "Aunt Mary and Uncle Lem were a jolly pair and the life of their social circle; with a kind word and a glad hand for everybody, they pulled together in more serious matters. They were successful and listed among the large property owners in Taunton. How that couple could dance!" In the 1880 Taunton Directory, Mrs. Lemuel M. Leonard is listed as living at 125 Winthrop.
