James Austin LEONARD was born before 1833. James and his brother Thomas were in the Jasper-Newton County areas, Texas, from about 1857 until the Civil War.

He served in the Confederate forces in the Civil War, mostly in the TN-MS area. He and his brother Tom sold their stock and slaves in 1861, before Ft. Sumter and the start of the Civil War.

After the Civil War, James was in Trinity County, TX, where he made a power of attorney, and travelled to West Texas, where he was killed.
