New England Families, HIstorical and Genealogical, Vol. 3, p. 1343: "Hereceived a common school education. At the time gold was discovered inCalifornia, he joined the gold-seekers, making the journey by was of theIsthmus of Panama, and remaining in the gold fields about a year. Afterhis return he engaged in farming. He had an extensive maple orchard ofsome 2,500 trees, from which he produced annually about six hundredgallons of syrup. He was also a dealer in maple sugar and syrup and injellies, buying from the farmers and selling at retail and to themarkets. He was a pioneer in the manufacture of cider apple jelly andestablished plants to manufacture it at Wilmington, Jacksonville, andNewfane, VT. He made a specialty also of his dairy. His homesteadcomprised about two hundred acres of land. He lived until within twoyears of his death at Dover, removing thence to Wilmington, where hedied. He was deacon of the Congregational Church at Dover. During thelast years of his life, his business was conducted mainly by his son,which whom he was in partnership under the firm name of D.G.
