He died on 15 October 1682 at the age of 71 in Middletown, Newport Co., RI. Obadiah was adminted to the church in Salem, MA, March 24, 1639, from which he was excommunicated, and, in 1646, removed with his family to Rehoboth, MA. There he became a member of Samuel Newman's church. Disliking his discipline and some of his tenants, Obadiah and 8 others severed their connection to the church and established a new church in 1649. They soon declared for the principles of the Baptists, chose Mr. Holmes as their minister, and were rebaptized by Rev. Mr. John Clark of Newport. The Plymouth magistrates made life miserable for them with Court orders, fines, lashings, and the like. Likewise, in Massachusetts Bay Colony: Obadiah was seized in Lynn, MA, for preaching the Baptist faith, sentenced to 30 lashes, which were delivered without mercy in front of the First Church, Boston (Gov. Joseph Jencks of RI said " in many days if not some weeks, he could take no rest but...he lay upon his knees and elbows, not being able to suffer any part of his body to touch the bed whereon he lay"). Obadiah moved to Newport by 1652 where he succeeded Mr. Clark there as minister of the First Baptist Church when Clark was sent to England by the Colony to seek a new charter. On 4 April 1676 he was chosen one of RI's "most judicious inhabitants" to advise the General Assembly on King Philip's War. The action against Holmes, as well as Clarke and Crandall, so aroused Rhode Island that Massachusetts Bay Colony revoked a commision to Coddington, who was planning to dismember the little colony, and thus Rhode Island was saved. (Boyer, p. 309). For more on Obadiah Holmes, see "The English Ancestry of Obadiah Holmes, NEHGR 64:237 and 67:21. Also, a family history by J. T. Holmes, The American Family of Obadiah Holmes (1915).
