He died on 5 January 1681 at the age of 85 in Middletown, R.I.. He was buried on 19 October 1681 in Middletown, Newport, RI. Families, Vol. II. John Peckham appears in Newport, R.I., in 1638. He probably came over on the Griffin. He was a zealous Baptist and was associated with the Clarkes and others who were among the active supporters of Anne Hutchinson. His lands were allotted with those of William Freeborn, John Coggeshall and others who were the first settlers of the Island of Aquidneck (Rhode Island -- where Newport is now located). He soon bought a tract of land one mile square in Little Compton, on which they built a house in 1640? which stood for 200 years and in which 6 generations of Peckhams were born (the Peckhams are still large landholders in Little Compton -- I went to school with a bunch of them in the 1940's). John's first wife died sometime before 1648. His second wife was baptised in 1648. He was one of the original members of the Newport First Baptist Church when it was founded in 1644. There's a problem here: figure out which John Peckham married Eleanor Weaver and which married Mary Clarke. Mary CLARKE and John PECKHAM were married before 1637 in Newport, RI?.222 1621. Mary CLARKE was born on 26 July 1607 in Westthorpe, Sussex, England. She died in 1647 at the age of 40 in Newport, Newport Co., RI. She was buried in Newport, Newport Co., RI. Children were:
