426. John LEONARD210 was born on 12 March 1778 in Shaftsbury, VT. He died on 23 April 1869 at the age of 91 in Orwell, VT. He was initially engaged in the merchantile business in Middlebury, later in Orwell. He also built a flouring mill, one for carding wool and dressing cloth, and two for the manufacture of lumber. Later he built on Lake Champlain three miles distant from his residence, a large wharf, store, storehouses, hotel, etc. This port afforded an outlet for the marble, manganese, and manufactures of the insland towns and an inlet for the goods which those towns required. He was averse to public life, although he filled at various times nearly all of the offices of the town. He was an ardent sportsman who owned 26 hounds.
