426. John LEONARD²¹⁰ was born on 12 March 1778 in Shaftsbury, VT. He died on 23 April 1869 at the age of 91 in Orwell, VT. He was initially engaged in the merchantile business in Middlebury, later in Orwell. He also built a flouring mill, one for carding wool and dressing cloth, and two for the manufacture of lumber. Later he built on Lake Champlain three miles distant from his residence, a large wharf, store, storehouses, hotel, etc. This port afforded an outlet for the marble, manganese, and manufactures of the insland towns and an inlet for the goods which those towns required. He was averse to public life, although he filled at various times nearly all of the offices of the town. He was an ardent sportsman who owned 26 hounds.

John LEONARD and Lucina WRIGHT were married on 9 October 1825. Lucina WRIGHT died in November 1826. She was born in Shoreham, VT.

Artemisia FOSTER died on 9 March 1866 in Orwell, VT. She was born in Keene, Cheshire Co., NH.

1021	i.	Charles Rich LEONARD was born on 3 September 1832 in Orwell, VT. He died on 19 April 1890 at the age of 57 in Saranac Lake, NY. He never married. He was interested in genealogy and developed the descendants of his grandfather David in Manning Leonard's book. He was fond of reading and occasionally wrote poetry.
