He learned the blacksmith trade. He married in 1820 and came to Venice twp with his family in the year 1834. When his father died in 1814, Avery inherited his farm, but had to wait five years to take possession at age 21. He bought 160 acres in Ohio in 1819, married in 1821, sold the PA farm, and moved with his family and mother to Harrison Co., OH. In 1833, he moved again to 160 acres in Venice twp in far SE Seneca County, OH. That farm is still in the family. (per G. Allan Vaughan, letter, 28 August 2007). At the time of the 1850 Census, Avery and his family were living in Venice twp., Seneca Co., OH, where Avery was a farmer. In the 1880 Census, he was living with his son, name illegible (looks like Finley -- William called him Fin Leonard), and son's wife Margaret. Hugh Finley, 25, was boarding with the family. Avery LEONARD and Nancy SMITH were married about 1820. Nancy SMITH175, daughter of Samuel SMITH, was born about 1803 in Pennsylvania. She died in 1872 at the age of 69 in Seneca Co., OH.
