575. William ROOT was born on 25 March 1759 in Great Barrington, Berkshire, Co., MA. He died in Claverack, Columbia Co., NY. When William was sixteen years old, the American Revolution had begun and he enlisted, and was mustered into the Massachusetts line for the war. At Monmouth, and at the storming and taking of Stoney Point under General Wayne, being only nineteen years of age, he led a platoon of eighteen picked men into the fort in the midst of the greatest carnage. In a very few minutes after this daring deed the fort was taken.
