At Monmouth, and at the storming and taking of Stoney Point under General Wayne, being only nineteen years of age, he led a platoon of eighteen picked men into the fort in the midst of the greatest carnage. In a very few minutes after this daring deed the fort was taken. They had two children, Lydia and James. William ROOT and Rhoda FITCH were married in 1783 in Sheffield, Berkshire Co., MA.
