Thomas HANCOCK and Jemima WRIGHT were married on 16 November 1749 in Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. Jemima WRIGHT, daughter of Benjamin WRIGHT and Mary MILLER, was born on 23 January 1729 in Chicopee, Hamden Co., MA. She died on 6 August 1809 at the age of 80 in Wolcott, Seneca Co., NY. Jemima was a very small woman. She was about the same height as her grandson, Levi, when he was six years, four months old.
After losingtwo of her sons in the Revolutionary War, her youngest son, Thomas, decided to enlist. Jemima is reported to have cried, "how can I spare my last son. He is all my dependence. When General Washington heard of it, he discharged Thomas, say, "I cannot rob her of her remaining son. Here, take the boy; you have done enough."
