At the age of 15, he went from home to learn the trade of a joiner, but before his apprenticeship had expired, he left his master and went to Pittsfield, where he remained about 2 years. At 21, he to Springfield to work at his trade in the United States Armory and continued there, except for an interval of 2 years, till the close of his life. His family resided at Springfield util 1820. He treated his wife with great severity. Vinton: "He killed his wife with an axe, and cut his own throat, Dec. 14, 1825." Samuel LEONARD and Harriet COMSTOCK were married on 8 April 1812. Harriet COMSTOCK122, daughter of Josiah COMSTOCK and Lucy PRATT, was born about 1793 in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. She died on 14 December 1825 at the age of 32 in West Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.31 She was murdered by her husband, Samuel, while the children looked on. He then committed suicide.
