Seventh Generation

2015. Rev. Dr. Raymond Henry LEONARD was born on 2 February 1815 in In or near Prescott, Ontario, Canada. He died on 1 August 1895 at the age of 80 in Elyria, OH. His early studies for the Presbyterian ministries were undertaken at Rochester, NY, in 1837. From 1840 to 1844, he and his wife were in Cincinnati as student and houseguests of Professor C. E. Stowe and his wife, Harriet Beecher Stowe (author of Uncle Tom's Cabin). He studied at Lane Theological Seminary from 1844 to 1848 when the Madison Presbytery ordained him. Hanover College awarded his Doctor of Divinity degree in 1888. He was a frequent visitor to Chicago where he stayed with his brother, Rev. Joseph Helmer Leonard.

"The Rev. R. H. Leonard, D.D., died on August 2 at the home of his daughter in Elyria, Ohio, in the seventy-ninth year of his age. He was well known and greatly beloved in this region, where he did his last miniterial work in charge of the Fourth and Elmwood Churches. He entered the ministry nearly a half century ago and was identified with the New School body until the period of the reunion. He was a true Christian man, evangelical in his belief, warm-hearted and sympathetic, full of devotion to Christ and unswerving in his loyalty to the Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Cincinnati Presbytery and was one of the oldest ministers in the body. Dr. Leonard graduated from Lane Seminary in 1848 and was ordained by the Presbytery the same year. For twenty years he was secretary of the Western Seaman's Friend Society and for the following six years was pastor in East Cleveland. In 1873 he took charge of the church of Ludlow, KY, remaining with them for two years. Since then, or for twenty years, his home has been in Cincinnati, where he has been loved and where he will be lovingly remembered." From the Herald and Presbyter of Cincinnati as it appeared in the Elyria Democrat, August 8, 1895.

Rev. Dr. Raymond Henry LEONARD and Margaret COWAN were married on 25 January 1837. Margaret COWAN, daughter of John COWAN and Jane MCMILLAN, was born on 10 February 1818 in Kingston, Canada. She died on 6 January 1894 at the age of 75 in Elyria, OH. From the Elyria Weekly Republican, Elyria, Ohio, 11 January 1894.

The death of Mrs. Margaret Cowan Leonard, the wife of Rev. R. H.
Leonard, D.D., of Cincinnati, which occurred last Saturday morning, at
the residence of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Edward P.
French, in Elyria, has brought sorrow to a large circle of friends in
this vicinity and elsewhere. Mrs. Leonard was taken ill with the grip
about eight weeks ago at her home in Cincinnati. When it was found that
her condition was serious, she was brought to the home of her daughter,
Mrs. French, where, surrounded by her children, she received all the
care which loving hearts and gentle hands could bestow on her. The long
journey was made with safety and comfort. She continued however to sink
rapidly, until Saturday morning, when her long and useful life came to
an end, and peacefully and calmly, with her husband and all her children
by her bedside, she passed over the silent river, and entered into her
heavenly rest. During her last illness, she was singularly free from
suffering, and happy in her perfect trust in her Saviour, and in the
love of her dear ones. Mrs. Leonard was a lady of ripe Christian
character and earnest devotion to her family, and to the work of the
divine Master. In addition to her duties as the wife of a bust city
pastor, (Dr. Leonard being for many years the pastor of the Fourth
Presbyterian Church, of Cincinnati), she was much interested in literary
pursuits, and many of her poems and other writings have appeared in
various periodicals. Dr. and Mrs. Leonard have five children, all of
them prosperous and highly respected in the cities in which they live.
They are Mr. Henry R. Leonard, a thriving merchant in Detroit; Mrs.
David Carter, also of Detroit, whose husband is the manager of a large
line of steamships; Mrs. E. P. French, of Elyria whose husband is
engaged largely in the furniture business in Cleveland; Miss Hattie N.
Leonard, an artist in Detroit; and Mr. Lyman B. Leonard, of Cleveland,
in business with Mr. French.

The funeral services were held on Tuesday morning, at 10:30 o?clock, at
the home of Mr. French, and were conducted by Rev. J. J. Francis, D.D.,
of Cincinnati, assisted by Rev. E. E. Williams, pastor of the
Congregational Church of Elyria. Dr. Francis, who has been for many
years a close friend of Dr. and Mrs. Leonard, also accompanied the
family to Cleveland at 12:30 o?clock, and to the beautiful Lake View
Cemetery, where the beloved form was laid to rest.
