In the 1830 Census, he was living in Hanover, Morris County, NJ, near his father, Paul. He had four young male children. In the 1850 Census, he was living with his son's wife's parents, George and Phebe Squier in Morris Co., NJ. (In 1850 he was residing in Newfane, Niagara Co., NY.?)

James Harvey LEONARD and Hyla Martha WILLIS were married on 30 April 1818 in Pequannock twp., Morris Co., NJ. Hyla Martha WILLIS, daughter of Joseph WILLIS and Mary BALDWIN, was born on 21 August 1802 in Pine Brook or Pequanek, NJ. She died on 8 August 1867 at the age of 64.
