He worked for his uncle of the same name, Hermon Camp, in the merchantile business. In 1849 he sailed to San Francisco around Cape Horn, intending to set up a business there. However, he encountered in San Francisco an acquaintance from New York, Henry Green, and they decided to venture together to Astoria, Oregon, and to establish there their merchantile business -- in competition with the Hudson Bay Company. Hermon was a founder and officer in the Oregon Iron Company, which established a furnace in Lake Oswego.

After a few years in Astoria, Hermon and Henry turned over their Astoria enterprises to their brothers, Washington Irving Leonard and John Green, and went off to Portland, where they were very successful. Hermon became the Secretary of the Portland Gas Light Company and Vice President of the Portland Artificial Ice Company. He lived at the corner of 1st and A Streets. He never married and died in Portland. His remains were shipped back to Owego, NY, for burial.

Leonard Street in Lake Oswego, OR, is named for him.
