Fourth Generation

292. Jedidiah LEONARD378 was born in 1730 in Easton, Bristol Co., MA. He died on 16 May 1776 at the age of 46 in Bolton or Vernon, CT.379 Sarah may have been married before (Thomas Price) and had a number of children by him.

ECL says Jedidiah probably married Sarah Baldwin of Hanover, NJ, probably at the First Church of Hanover. There were a number of Leonards in Hanover, Morris County, NJ, including not only Stephen of the James line, but Benjamin of the Solomon line and their descendants. One must be doubly careful to keep the Leonard lines straight in Morris County.

Jedidiah Leonard and his wife became members ("renewed their covenant") of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme 5 November 1759 and had their children Phebe, Eunice, Rebecca, and Asa baptized on the same date (per First Congregational Church records, CT State Library).

A Jebediah Leonard enlisted 8 September 1755, discharged 10 December 1755, Eighth Co., Capt. Harris, from CT Hist. Society Collections, Vol. IX, French-Indian War Rolls, Vol. 1, Vol. 2. He may also be the Jedidiah Leonard who served in Co. of Capt. Ellsworth, 1775.

A Jedidiah Leonard apparently lived in Bolton, CT, near Tolland. He and Sarah baptized all their children 5 May 1776, apparently just before he died. Info about Jedidiah from NEHGS Register, 58:197 and 59:213 and 60:201. Is this the same Jedidiah Leonard? Did they move from Lyme to Bolton? Was Jedidiah a stone-cutter? His son, Asa, seems to have been a stone-cutter in Stockbridge, MA, for some years, earning enough money at that to finance his purchase of land in Tioga Co., NY, and to move there.

Jedidiah's death is noted in the church records of Vernon, CT. He was 46 when he died. Jedidiah's will mentions only his wife, Sarah.

Jessie Deith from Illinois, a descendant of Jedidiah through Huldah, is researching this line and supplied the information on Hulda's descendants. 6 Sept. 2006.

Benjamin Leonard, a descendant of Jedidiah's son Asa, is researching this line and supplied the information on Asa's descendants.

Four children were baptized in Lyme, CT; 5 children were baptized in Vernon, CT; and 1 child died in Vernon, CT. ECL had no information on Jedidiah's children and had his death date as 1776.

Jedidiah LEONARD and Sarah BALDWIN were married on 28 April 1752 in Hanover, Morris Co., NJ.380 Sarah BALDWIN was born in 1734 in Hanover, Morris Co., NJ. She died on 27 June 1783 at the age of 49 in Vernon, CT.381 An NEHGS article, "Records of the Church in Vernon, CT", 1906, p. 265, notes that the wife of Jedidiah Leonard became a communicant May 25, 1776. There were a number of Sarah Baldwins, and Baldwins generally, in Morris County. Some of them came from Milford, CT. (Hanover Presbyterian Church records, Internet).

Jedidiah LEONARD and Sarah BALDWIN had the following children:

Mary LEONARD was born (date unknown).

Capt. Asa LEONARD.

Eunice LEONARD382 was born before 5 November 1759.

Phebe LEONARD383 was born before 5 November 1759.

Rebecca LEONARD383 was born before 5 November 1759.

son LEONARD was born about 1768. He died on 21 October 1775 at the age of 7 in Bolton, CT. Noted in Vernon, CT, church records.
