423. Harrod LEONARD was born in June 1827 in IN. He died in 1900 at the age of 73 in IA. Name sometimes spelled Herod. He was a farmer and stock raiser in Long Creek twp. He assisted his father on the farm until he was 19 years of age and in 1848 accompanied him to Iowa. He settled in Fairfield, Jefferson Co., where he remained 3 years, then removed to Wapello Co., and thence, in 1855, to Decatur County. He commenced with very little means, and when he was married he was $75 in debt. He rented land at first, and by hard work and good management, assisted by his excellent wife, he saved enough in four years to purchase a home. He is honest, energetic and hospitable. He has been a member of the School Board 15 years.

Harrod LEONARD and Mahala THOMPSON were married on 18 May 1851 in POttumwa, Wapello Co., IA. Mahala THOMPSON was born in March 1834 in Macoupin, IL. She died in 1900 at the age of 66 in IA.
