2004
December 20th - Brad named an All-American by Inside Triathlon magazine, one of ten for M70-74 (eight from U.S.A., two from Canada).
December 18 - Rocky Mtn. Masters Slalom, Copper Mountain. Brad - 2nd M70-74.
November 7 - Noosa Triathlon, Noosa, Queensland, Australia. Sue - 3:18:07, 11/13 55-59; Brad 3:13:22, 3/5 70-74. Noosa Triathlon is world's second largest triathlon, with a field of almost 10,000, including teams. It rained, heavy at times, first time in 22 years of Noosa triathlons. This was a very well-run race culminating Noosa Multi-Sport Week We had a good time during the week, racing, watching races, acclimatizing to sea level, and taking surf boarding lessons. #166
November 5 - 5K fun run, Noosa, Queensland, Australia. Sue - 27 minutes, Brad - 31 minutes. Run into Noosa National Park, then back out to Noosa Pt. and back along beach.
November 5 - Eyeline 1000 meter Ocean Swim. Sue - DNF, Brad, 7/7, M70+, 29:47. A thunderstorm moved in as we were swimming. Sue and most of the field were sent back to the beach when lightning starting hitting nearby. Brad was in an early wave and finished. It got very dark, 2 meter ocean swells with whitecaps kicked up by strong wind, thick sea weed near shore, pelting rain, difficult to see turn buoys, a real "why am I doing this?" race!.
October 31 - Run-Swim-Run, Noosa, Queensland, Australia. 1.5K run, 1 K swim, 1.5K run. Sue - 42:34, 5/5 F50-59 Brad - 42:53, 2/2, M70+. Run was in soft sand at high tide, swim out and then parallel with beach, quite a strong wind kicking up whitecaps.
October 3 - 9 - Huntsman World Senior Games, St. George, Utah, 3,000 feet above sea level. 10K run: - Sue - 53:45, 2nd F55-59; Brad - 61:58, 5th M70-74; bike hill climb, 3.1 mi. with elevation gain of 1,000 ft.: Sue - 24:30, 2nd F55-59; Brad - 21:54, 3rd M70-74; bike time trial, 20k at 5,300 elevation: Sue - 42:07, 2nd F55-59; Brad - 36:28, 3rd M70-74; 5k run: Sue - 23:50, 1st F55-59; Brad - 28:17, 4th M70-74; 1500 meter swim: Brad - 32:57, 3rd M70-74; triathlon - 500 yard swim, 12.4 mi. bike, 3.1 mi. run: Sue 1:24:53, 2nd F55-59, Brad 1:21:41, 1st M70-74. Fantastic weather, well-run races, very competitive, particularly in Brad's age group. High point for Sue was winning 5k run; for Brad, winning triathlon and being first across finish line due to being in the starting wave. Sue won a gold and 4 silver medals, Brad a gold and 3 bronzes.
September 18 - USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship, Shreveport, LA. 1575 meter swim, 40K bike, 10K run. Sue 3:18:13, 15/16 F55-59; Brad - 3:27:17, 6/9 70-74. Brad's race a disaster, swim a minute a hundred yards slower than at elevation, run one and one half minutes slower per mile than he ran a week earlier at 10,000' elevation. Brad was faster at the Boulder Peak Triathlon, a slightly longer, hillier, harder race at a mile above sea level. Sea level, heat and humidity his downfall? #165
September 12 - HealthQuest 5K, Copper Mountain, CO. Brad - 31:54, 1/2 70+, 26 of 61 overall. A race at my training elevation -- 10,000 feet above sea level.
August 29 - Rattlesnake Triathlon, Aurora, CO. 500 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.2 mile run. Sue: 1:31.32, 1/7 F 55-59, 84/175 women. Brad: 1:29:36, 1/3 M 70-74, 142/181 men. Great race in the hills east of Denver. Awards were pewter belt buckles of a coiled rattlesnake. #164
August 14 - Socorro Chili Festival Triathlon, Socorro, NM. 400 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Sue: 1:23:18, 1/6 F55-59, 34/101 women. Brad: 1:23:14, 3/6 M65+ (1/1 70+), 105/156 men. Nice race on a mostly closed course. Brad finished ahead of Sue by 4 seconds, but she was closing fast. #163
August 8 - Boulder Peaks Triathlon, Boulder, CO. 1500 meter swim, 26 mile bike, 10 k run. Sue: 3:30:56, 7/12 F55-59, 1199/1335 overall. Brad: 3:24:05, 1/3 M70-74, 1138 of 1335 overall. Outstanding race, national club championship, fantastic expo, awards 5 deep, pro's racing too, a true celebration of multisport. Bike course included 1400' climb to the top of Old Stage Hill. Brad improved time over last year by 27 minutes; Sue by 2 minutes. #162
August 1 - Evergreen Town Race, Evergreen, CO. 5K running race. Sue - 24:08, 2nd F50-59, 36/251 women; Brad - 28:59, 2nd M70+, 194/289 men. A very well-run race with a slightly downhill course at 7,000'.
July 29 - Stroke and Stride Series, Boulder, CO. 1500 meter swim and 5K run aquathlon at the Boulder reservoir. Sue - !:13:43, 134/143 overall. Brad 1:16:02, 136/143 overall. Interesting and fun race, with a few odd twists, like the run turnaround not being marked and people turning around kinda' when they felt like it. Brad, being sure he'd come to an orange cone and never did, ran a few extra minutes, but, what the heck, it was a good workout.
July 25 - Wray Wroad Wrace, Wray, CO, Wray to Haigler, NE, and back, 34 miles at 3300'. Sue: 1:53:00, overall women's winner. Brad: 1:41:31, 1st 70+, 11th of 17 overall. Very nice local bike road race. Sue won the huge travelling trophy as the women's winner of the long race (short race of 14 miles the same day). Brad won 70+ by 3 seconds after being a mile behind another 70-year-old at the 17 mile turnaround and catching him on the last rise coming back into Wray, demonstrating that the competitive spirit doesn't diminish with age (even if common sense does).
July 22: Great Adventure Sports Time Trial #3, Frisco to Copper up Ten Mile Canyon, 5.5 miles, 600' elevation gain from 9100' to 9700'. Sue: 24:27, 3/3 F50+, 65/69 overall. Brad 22:50, 5/5 M50+, 62/69 overall. Legs tired from trail race day before. No rain!

July 11: Spring Meadow Triathlon, Helena, MT. 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run. Sue 3:17:47, 60/64 overall, 1st F55-59; Brad 3:14:17, 58/64 overall, 1st 70-74. Great small race at 4,000' altitude. Bike started with a steady 7 mile uphill against the wind. Sprint race of about the same number started an hour after the Olympic distance race. #161
July 7: Nike Summit Trail Running Series #4, Breckenridge, 5k. Sue, 26:47, 4th women 35+; Brad 30:15, 7th men 35+. It is beginning to occur to me that it is not an advantage to be 70 in a 35+ age category. We finished just ahead of the p.m. t-storm.
July 3: Gore Creek Gallop 5K, Vail, CO. Sue 25:54, 2/19 F-50-59, 14/143 women; Brad 30:52, 1/3 M 70+, 53/82 men. "Low altitude" race for the week at 8,000', great weather, very nice first time race.
June 26-27: Colorado Senior Games, Greeley, CO. Greeley Triathlon counted as the Senior Games triathlon. 10K time trial: Sue - 19:50, 2nd 55-59; Brad 18:06 - 2nd, 70-74. 20K road race: Sue - 40:02 - 2nd F55-59; Brad - 36:39 - 1st M70-74 CO, 2nd Overall. 5k run: Sue 24:03, 1st F55-59; Brad - 29:30, 2nd M70-74. 500 yard swim: Sue - 10:01, 1st F55-59; Brad - 9:49, 2nd M70-74. Very nicely run competitions. Felt particularly good about the 20k bike road race because the last time I tried one of these, I got left in the dust in the first 100 yards. This time I took the lead for more than half the race and pushed the pace, maybe not smart race strategy for me personally, but gave us all in the 65+ age groups better overall times.
June 20 - Greeley Sprint Triathlon, Greeley, CO, 600 meter swim, 13 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Sue - 1:36:09, 1st 55-59, 41st of 105 women, 124th of 226 overall. Brad - 1:36:55, 1st 70-74, 86th of 119 men, 129th of 226 overall. Race through the neighborhoods of Greeley, started in a cold drizzle, finished in the warm sun. Triathlon #160 for Brad.
