379. Daniel
LEONARD was born on 18 May 1740 in Norton, now Mansfield, MA.
He died on 27 Jun 1829 in London, England.31
Graduate of Harvard, 1760. He also received a degree from Yale. Memberof the
General Court. Tory Loyalist. Accompanied the British to Bostonin 1776 and
thence to Halifax in 1776 (with family of 9) and finally toEngland to reside.
Appointed Chief Justice of Bermuda. Remains broughtback to Newport and interred
there.
Wrote loyalist papers under the signature of Massacusettensis, answeredby John
Adams under the signature of Novanglus. See Genealogical Memoirof the Leonard

Daniel had married Sarah Hammock, whose father had left her a fortune.Daniel
always liked the flashpots of life. He wore hats and clothestrimmed with gold
lace and travelled from Taunton in a gorgeous coach andfour, according to ECL,
who devoted 7 pages of his manuscript todescribing Daniel.
He was bred to the law, and was, before the Revolution, a member of theGeneral
Court, an able political writer, and, according to PresidentAdams, "supported
the Whig cause with great eloquence and energy." Hewas possessed of brilliant
talents and acquired great popularity, fromwhich Governor Hutchinson was led
to "exercise his blandishments uponhim, and, as he seldom failed when he
applied them in all their force,the tempter prevailed" and Mr. Leonard became
a loyalist. In 1774 he wasan addresser of Hutchinson and was appointed a Mandamus
Councillor thesame year.
He lived in Taunton on the Green near where the Court House stands. Onthe day
he became a mandamus councillor, he was driven from Taunton by amob. He left
Boston with Lord Howe, taking his family. In 1778 he wasproscribed by the General
Court of Massachusetts and his propertyconfiscated. He was appointed Chief Justice
of Bermuda in 1781, holdingthat position until 1815 when he returned to London.
Daniel visited theUnited States in 1799. His father, Ephraim, left his property
to hisgrandson Charles, provided he take an oath of allegiance to the UnitedStates.
According to the American of August 2, 1829, he was killed by theaccidental discharge
of a pistol. He was a native of Massachusetts, aclassmate at Harvard with John
Adams, and was one of the last of theLoyalists that were expatriated at the time
of the Revolution.

LEONARD and Anna WHITE were married on 2 Apr 1767 in Norton, MA.102 Anna WHITE (daughter of
Samuel WHITE) was born on 25 Feb 1740/41 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA.
She died on 14 Apr 1768 in Norton, Bristol, MA. Daniel LEONARD and
Anna WHITE had the following children:
Daniel LEONARD and Sarah HANCOCK were
married before 4 Mar 1770 in Taunton, Bristol, MA.416 Sarah HANCOCK (daughter
of Capt. John HANCOCK) was born about 1739. She died on 30 Jul 1806
in Aboard ship John Joy on way from Bermuda.417
She was buried in Newport, RI. Was her maiden name Hancock or Hammock?
ECL says Hammock. Her fatherwas rich and endowed her accordingly, which made
Daniel a wealthy man.She died at sea on her way from Bermuda to Newport, RI,
July 30, 1806.She is buried at Newport. Daniel LEONARD and Sarah HANCOCK had

LEONARD was born in Sep 1774. He died on 4 May 1831 in Norton,
Bristol, MA.102 Charles
returned to America and took the oath of allegiance to meet theconditions of
inheriting wealth from his grandfather, Ephraim. He becamean alcoholic, and
was found dead on a road in Norton. He died unmarried,according to Fanny Koster
