Second Generation
10. Uriah LEONARD
was born on 10 Jul 1662 in Raynham, Bristol Co., MA. He was born
on 10 Jul 1662. He died about 1742 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA.
He was attacked by Indians, but escaped early in King Philip's War. Dr.Fobes
in his genealogical sketch says that Uriah was riding from Tauntonto the Forge
and was fired upon by Indians. He plucked off his cap andswung it around to
startle his his horse to gallop at full speed to theforge. Several bullets passed
through the cap and into the neck of thehorse.
As an adult, he lived and worked as a farmer. Very little is known abouthim.
Check date of death (listed in Mayflower Descendants, Disk 2, as "aft.March
1721-2." Check also children: Elizabeth and Philip not listed inCaswell
genealogy; Jonathan listed.
He is listed in Thomas Leonard's Raynham Forge account books as acreditor and
a debtor in the 1701-06 period.
Here's the entire quote about Uriah from the ECL manuscript:
"He was born July 10, 1662 at Raynham, the youngest son and chld ofJames.
He married on June 1, 1685 Elizabeth Caswell, daughter of ThomasCaswell and
... Lincoln. Her brother Stephen Caswell married HannahThrasher, the sister
of Sarah who married Benjamin Leonard, the brotherof Uriah. Elizabeth Caswell
was born January 10, 1664. Uriah diedbefore 1749 aged about 80 years old. His
wife's mother was probably aLincoln as Vol 8, page 640, August 18, 1713 Bristol
Co. Deeds Uriah (2)sells 20 acres of land "which he had of his grandfather
Samuel Lincoln"October 2, 1712. As noted supra he sold out his interest
in WhittentonIronworks and moved up Prospect Hill and devoted himself to farming.Fobes
History says that he had five sons and four daughters. Four sonslived to be
over 80 years old and his daughters to be over 75 years. Hisyoungest son Philip
was accidentally shot and killed by his brotherWilliam when but two years old.

February 15, 1708.
54. Jonathan. (Nothing is known about him since 1729 when he signed apetition
regarding an estate.)

This date (1739) evidently is an error on the Raynham record astheir daughter

1779 at Wrentham to which place he had removed in1751.

Uriah (2) the youngest child of James was born in the old House oppositethe Forge
at Raynham July 10, 16 62. His mother died son after probablyin the spring of
1663/4. As he was the youngest he was probably the petof the family and allowed
to have his own way more than the others. Hisplaymate was his sister Hannah
who married Isaac Dean in her 17th yearand who was Uriah's senior by two years.
Their long lives, hersextending to 88 years and his to at least 80 years indicate
theirconstitutions were good; no doubt they had plenty of outdoor life andleft
to amuse themselves to a great extent. Dr. Fobes in hisgenealogical sketch says
that Uriah was riding from Taunton to the Forgeduring King Philip's War and was
fired upon by the Indians; plucking hiscap off he swung it around and startled
his horse and in full gallopreached the forge without a wound, but several bullets
were shot throughthe hat he had in his hand through the neck of the horse near
the same.Uriah was but thirteen years old when this occurred but one bullet infive
is calculated to hit in war there must have been quite a force ofIndians in ambuscade
and their remarkable fascination in firing at thehat is strange. (Repeated in
NEHGS Register, 1851, p. 414-5)
("Once during King Philip's War, (John Eddy's) horse was impressed forthe
use of Uriah Leonard, who used it to travel to Little Compton, RI, onan expedition."
The Eddy Family in America, p. 660. "6 days" paid for,p. 60. Uriah
was only 14 at the time. With whom and why did he go toLittle Compton? With
Benjamin Church?)
Uriah was also put to work to learn the Bloomers trade and at the deathof his
father he had a half interest in the Whittenton Force and thedwelling house there
and the land adjoining and was to pay hisstep-mother 600 pounds of iron per
year or about $30. There were aboutthirty acres attached to the dwelling house
and as Uriah had been married6 years it is probable he was already living there.
After working at theForge some 8 years and putting in another Hearth with his
brotherBenjamin and his sister-in-law Mary he sold his interest to his nephewJames
Leonard for 300 pounds including the land where the new Cole Housestood and the
Iron Mine at Eight MIle Pond 1/3 interest in the Mine ofBenjamin Leonard at the
Eight Mile Pond. His homestead of 30 acres withtwo dwelling houses and a Barn
on the same and 40 acres up by DanielFishers and 14 acres of the West end of
Mr. Farwells and 20 acres atRumford--reserving his Smith's shop at Whittenton
and James was to paythe 400 pounds to the widow of James, Senior. What induced
Uriah to makethis move is difficult to understand, unless he was carrying on
aBlacksmith's shop and Benjamin Leonard was working the hearth and Edward,Joseph's
son the other Hearth and there was but little money made. Jamestook the Works
and in the following course of years became the sole ownerof the Works together
with a large landed estate immediately around itand large interests elsewhere.
He became rich out of it all.
Uriah moved about three miles to the northeast of Prospect Hill and theresettled
as a farmer. He had four sons and four daughters and owing tothe scarcity of
records our information concerning this is scant. Onceor twice Uriah is mentioned
in Judge Thomas accounts as doing some of thecarting or mowing but there is otherwise
very little about him. In hisold age he divided his homestead between his sons
William and James. OnJanuary 10, 1737 he sells 20 acres (as he expressed it)
of his homesteadto his son William for 600 pounds tenor with several other tracts
onOctober 25, 1739 for 300 pound he sells 25 1/2 acres of his homestead tohis
son James and several other tracts. He had given his son Uriah, hiseldest son,
a tract of land many years before towards his portion, andthere is no mention
of him in the Probate Records. What became of theson Jonathan we have never
learned. There are daughters whose names andhistory we do not know.
The following is in Bristol County Deeds Vol. 1, page 58.

Was Eleazer Carver married to Experience Blake, whose sisterMary was the wife
of Joseph Leonard?
A Uriah Leonard (this one?) sold to his son William, husbandman, severalparcels

a piece of cedar swamp May 14, 1725.
A letter of 1899 of Thomas J. Lothrop to Lucinda Leonard Lincoln saysthat Uriah
and Elizabeth lived on what is now Propspect Hill Street ("weused to call
it Cedar Swamp Road"), near place where Abner Leonard lived. Uriah LEONARD
and Elizabeth CASWELL were married on 4 Jun 1685 in Taunton, Bristol, MA.33 Elizabeth

in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA. Alternative birth date: Jan. 10, 1664/5,
per Dorothy Stansbury Leonard. Uriah LEONARD and Elizabeth CASWELL had the following

MA. He died on 13 Nov 1695 in Taunton, MA. Accidentally
killed by his brother William. | 82 | viii. | Jonathan
LEONARD35 was born in
1698 in Taunton, MA. ECL: "Nothing is known about him, except
that he signed a deed in 1729showing he was in Taunton." It's strange that
he doesn't otherwiseappear in the records. Wife? Children? Confused with another
JonathanLeonard? Did he have a son, Lee, who received the Whittenden Iron Worksat
Jonathan's death in 1779? Or is that another Jonathan? |
