32. Lt. Joseph LEONARD77 was born on 29 July 1732 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA.78 He died on 1 November 1783 at the age of 51 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA.79,80 ECL: "He was a Lieutenant in the Militia." He had also served in the Revolutionary War. He is various referred to in court documents as a joiner by occupation. He apparently lived in the Muttock area of Middleborough and worked at Peter Oliver's forge and slitting works, later operated by Abiel Washburn. During the time he worked there, Jesse Bryant, who would later become father-in-law of Joseph's son, Nathaniel, was foreman, and about 50 men were employed full-time there. The works were on the Nemasket River, where permission for a dam had been obtained, providing a sluiceway for herring to move through. See pp. 359-367 of Weston's "History of the Town of Middleborough" (1909). He is referred to as Joseph Leonard 3rd in marriage by Benjamin Ruggles and Joseph 3rd as a private in the militia during the Revolutionary War. ECL/GML notes refer to Massachusetts Vital Records as source of birth date for Joseph and Joseph and Abigail's marriage date. They note an alternative marriage date of October 11, 1753, per Boston Transcript. Middleboro VR's record the marriage as 7 May 1752. He sold 3+ acres of land in Middleborough to Samuel Miller in a deed dated 25 Feb 1783, witnessed by Elijah Shaw and Zebedee Sprout. Samuel Miller had bought 8 Apr 1780 neighboring land from Robert Sprout, duly signed by Robert Sprout and his wife, Hannah (Leonard) Sprout and witnessed by Gideon Leonard and Joshua White. Joseph Leonard sold on 25 Nov 1778 5 acres of land from his homestead farm to Robert Sprout, Jr. The deed was signed by Joseph Leonard and his wife, Abigail (latter's mark). Many of Joseph's relatives, direct and by marriage, were members of the First Church of Middleborough. These would include his grandmother, Charity Leonard, his maternal grandparents Nathaniel Southworth and Jael Bennet, his wife's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather (Barnabus Raymond, John Jr., and John Sr.), his son Nathaniel's wife, Betsy Bryant, her parents, Jesse Bryant and Mercy Shaw, grandparents Jesse Bryant and Susannah Winslow, and great-grandparents Conant. See Membership of The First Church of Middleborough, 1854, which lists its membership through 1854, repeated in an appendix of Thomas Weston's HIstory of Middleborough, 1905. Many of Joseph's children have the same names as those of Joseph's father, Joseph, but there's little or no information about them. The GML charts list Joseph, Noah, Gideon, Hannah, Timothy, Abiah, Nathaniel, Fear, Abigail, and Remember. Check for land record dtd 10 Nov 1790 concerning his widow and four daughters. Aug. 1, 1729 (a Deborah m. John Cushman, of Plympton, February 3, 1746), Abigail, b. October 3, 1732 (an Abigail m. Joseph Leonard, 3rd, of Middleboro, May 7, 1752. ..."). "A very intelligent man considering his advantages. He was so keen and discriminating he was called Lawyer Leonard." He is referred to as a millwright when he sold land to his son, Joseph Craigie Leonard, on 27 May 1829. This Joseph is listed in the 1800 Census as having 2 sons 16-25, himself 44+, a daughter 16-25, and a wife (Zilpha?) 26-44, all living in Middleborough. | | ii. | Gideon LEONARD86,87 was born in 1756 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. Nehemiah Allen's co., Capt. Amos Washburn's co., and Capt. John Barrow's co. He's listed in the 1800 Census with 1 male child under 10, 1 10-15, himself over 44, one daughter under 10, 2 10-15, and wife 26-44. If Hannah had married the Gideon (Gedion) Leonard born in 1739, he would have been a living heir at the time his father Joseph died in 1776. But he was not. Joseph 3rd was the single surviving male heir. | | iii. | Capt. Timothy LEONARD90 was born in 1761 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. She died in 1828 at the age of 65 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. This Abiah is sometimes confused with the Abiah who married (1) John Nelson and (2) Mark Haskell. Doublecheck! This Abiah appears to be member # 703 of the First Church of Middleborough: "703 Oc. 11, 1807, Abiah Sears, w. of Leonard, 1st h. Sebra Simmons, o. Leonard, dau. Joseph, d. 1828, ae. ab't. 55." Leonard Sears m. He was a soldier in Col. Benjamin Tupper's regiment in 1780-81 for 20 months and 7 days in the Revolutionary War (2 years, 9 mos, discharged at West Point, according to his pension record). He applied for Revolutionary War pension on 8 September 1820, at which time he was living in Oneida Co., NY, a laborer suffering from rheumatic complaints. His wife, Mehitable, was 50 and also infirm (dropsy?). His son, Henry, 18, was an idiot; his daughter, Abigail, 15, was in good health, and his son, Otis, 10, had a disorder in his throat; and finally his mother-in-law, Mehitable Richmond, 80, who was also unable to work. The papers go on to list the schedule of property he owned. Samuel Barrows of Jefferson Co., NY, testified in his behalf in September 1819, as did Joseph Bennet of Washington Co., VT, and Abiezer Richmond and Joshua Richmond and Isaac Richmond. Noah and Joseph are mentioned in the Richmond Genealogy. He and his wife moved to Augusta, Oneida County, NY, before 1800, where they died. In the 1790 Census, Noah and his family (4) were living in Middleborough; for the 1800 Census, Noah and his family of 4 were living in Augusta, Oneida Co., NY. Mrs. Walter K. Adams of Minneapolis, MN, applied for his pension record in 1938. Descendant? Did Noah have anything to do with Westmoreland Furnace in Oneida Co.? ECL-GML: See letter from Isaac Richmond Leonard, grandson of above, to Elizabeth F. Leonard 31 Jul 1901. | 16 | vi. | Ensign Nathaniel LEONARD. | | vii. | Fear LEONARD97 was born in 1770 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. She died in 1846 at the age of 76. ECL: "She died unmarried." She died on 21 April 1843 at the age of 71 in New Vineyard, Franklin Co., ME.99 She was buried in Notch Cemetery, New Vineyard, Franklin Co., ME. This may be in error. Abiah Leonard, daughter of an earlier Joseph Leonard, married Ephraim Hackett 9 Feb 1761 in Middleborough. Also, the marriage would have occurred just before Abigail died. Alternative date for marriage in records - 8 June 1793 in Middleborough. | | ix. | Remember LEONARD100 was born on 27 July 1775 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. She died on 26 February 1803 at the age of 27 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. Leonard Sears was her cousin. He later married her sister Abiah. | | x. | Simeon LEONARD101 was born on 15 July 1780 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA.101 He died 1780's in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA.102 Not in 1790 Census for Middleborough. This may or may not be the right birthdate; Middleborough VR's don't identify parents in this case. GML wrote in that this Simeon, son of Joseph and Abigail, died in infancy. He sometimes gets confused with Zadock Leonard's son Simeon, also born in 1780, and is sometimes given that Simeon's death date (12 Jun 1823). |
