936. Joshua COGGESHALL383 was born in 1623 in Halstead, Essex, England. He was born about 1631. He died on 1 May 1688 at the age of 65 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. He arrived on September 16, 1632, with his father on the ship Lyon. He held several offices in the colony, but devoted most of his time to farming. After his father's death, he purchased a farm of about two hundred acres near the boundary of Newport and Portsmouth. He made his home near the shore, not far from the Cornell farm at the north. He died of measles. He left the farm in equal shares to three sons. Daniel received the homestead portion and later built a house near the road. This farm is still standing and is known as the Redwood Farm. Joan WEST and Joshua COGGESHALL were married on 22 December 1652 in Newport, Newport Co., RI. John COGGESHALL384 was born on 14 December 1659 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. He died on 1 May 1727 at the age of 67 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. John Coggeshall was a mercer and merchant. On June 22, 1632 he appears on a list of thirty-three men "transported to New England to the Plantation there. He emigrated from England to the New World on the ship "Lyon," arriving on September 16, 1632. He was admitted a freeman of Roxbury, MA, on November 6, 1632, and two years later, in 1634, removed to Boston, where he became a merchant. His name also heads the list of deputies to the General Court of Massachusetts from Boston May 14, 1634. He was one of the staunchest supporters and defenders of Anne Hutchinson and Rev. Wheelwright, and upon her banishment was expelled from the Court and from the State of Massachusetts. He settled on the island of Aquidneck March 7, 1638, by the advice of Roger Williams, who had already settled in Providence. He moved to Newport April 28, 1639 with eight others, signing a new compact. He received 400 acres in the south part of Newport. He was an assistant in 1640-44. In May 1647 John Coggeshall was elected moderator of the first Rhode Island General Assembly and died in office in 1647. He is buried a few rods west of his house. His descendants have erected a monument to his memory in the little burial ground, at the corner of Coggeshall and Victoria Avenues.
