There is confusion as to this line of Greenes. Was the John Greene of Quidnesset the John Greene of Newport or the John Greene of Coventry? John Greene of Quidnesset (who would have been this John Greene's father) was born abt. 1606 and married Joan -- about 1642. He died abt. 1692. Two genealogists differ as to the line here. Austin says John Greene (2) married Mary Jefferay, but lists as their son the same John Greene whom Bates, another genealogist, considers to be the son of Henry Greene (2) (John of Quidnesset (1).) Henry Greene was born about 1650. He married Sarah Greenman, who inherited from her father land in Portsmouth adjoining the farm purchased by John Greene of Newport in 1647. About 1680 he went to Shrewbury, NJ. He died abt. 1694. John Greene (3) bought 60 acres at Shrewbury, NJ, of John Colver, and married Sarah Peckham, according to John Austin. Bates has John (3) admitted a freeman of Newport in 1694, in which year the townsmen ordered that there be laid out to John Greene of Newport 8 acres of land in Portsmouth that belonged to his freehold, which had been given to Sarah Greenman Greene, his mother. In 1705 he and his wife Mary sold this land to William Sanford. The confusion is not cleared up in Lora LaMance, The Greene Family and Its Branches, 1904. I think the latest research shows that John Greene of Quidnesset and John Greene of Newport are one and the same. This bears further checking out. He and Benedict Arnold bought Goat Island, Coaster's Harbor Island, and Dyer's Island of Cachanaquant, Chief Sachem of Indians in Narragansett Bay in 1658. He was also involved in various dealings with Richard Smith of Narragansett and Newport. It appears that John Greene of Newport was in league with Richard Smith of Narragansett from the time of the Pequot War in 1637. HIs son was Lt. John Greene. John Greene and Caleb Carr bought and exchanged lands on several occasions. 809. Mary JEFFERAY was born on 20 March 1642. She died after 1705 at the age of 63. Children were:
