Home Surname List Name Index Sources Email Us | Fourth Generation10. Thomas Huddy PEABODIE33 was born on 1 February 1790 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. He died on 16 August 1867 at the age of 77 in Bristol, RI.34 Resided at: dwelling 103 in Bristol, RI . He was buried at Section 2, Lot 211, also listed as #1308, in North Burial Ground, Bristol, R.I.. Fitz Peabodie paid for the cemetery lot. 1850 Census enumerated the family July 27, 1850, with Thomas, 59, farmer, born in RI, wife Sally, 52, born in MA, children Susan 16, Frederick, 13, Catherine, 10, and James, 7., living with Robert Rogers, 57, merchant. (Microfilm 841, page 9029). Catherine and James are listed as having been born in Pennsylvania. Does this mean the whole family lived in PA or that the two children were adopted from other members of the family? There is a Thomas Peabody living in Columbia, Bradford Co., PA, in the 1840 Census with wife and 9 children who fit the pattern. They are gone from Columbia, PA, in the 1850 Census. In the 1860 Census, he and Sally, both 69 (!), are listed as living in Rehoboth, MA, where he was a farmer, living with a Francis Manchester, 24, born in RI, Catherine Manchester, 20, born in Pennsylvania, Virginia Manchester, 1, born in RI, and Anna Manchester, 4 mos., born in RI. A James Peabody, 17, laborer, born in Pennsylvania (their son?), is also listed in the household. If Catherine Manchester was really 20 (age garbled), then it would make sense that she was Thomas and Sally's daughter Catherine now married to Francis Manchester and their two children. Francis was a grandson of John and Rebecca Manchester whose son John married Thomas' brother Charles' daughter Sarah Ann. Francis was living in the household of his grandmother, Rebecca, in the 1850 Census. Francis went on to be a gas pipe fitter (1870 Census), then by 1900 a foreman at the gas company, remarrying Ada, b. in England, in 1896. He died 26 May 1923 at age 86. Birthdate given as August 1790 in Peabody genealogy and February 1790 by obituary in Bristol Phenix. RI "Births from Deaths" gives birth place as Newport Co. RI Vital Statistics gives birth of Thomas as August 23, 1790 in Portsmouth, parents John and Abbie Peabodie. RI Death Certificate gives death date as 16 August 1867 at age 77 5 months 21 days, which calculates to a birth date of 23 February 1790. Death certificate says his parents were John and Abbie Peabodie and that he was living on Bristol Neck, Bristol, RI, when he died of cancer of the face. Beamon's Birth from Death Records (1987) lists birth as 23 August 1790 (BrD 5-52) and parents as John and Abbie. In the 1790 Census, there is a John Pabodie b. 1760 in Portsmouth as head of a family in Portsmouth, with 1 male under 16, 1 over 16, 1 female, and 2 other persons in the household. In the 1800 Census, John Pabody in Portsmouth had 1 male over 45, a female 10 to 15, and 1 female over 45. Two John Pabodies are buried in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. One age 23 died 4 October 1820, and the other died December 13, 1838. Ephraim (d. 19 August 1787) and his wife, Jane Compton (d. 19 Oct. 1831) are buried there. They had a son named John b. February 5, 1766. There are a number of Pabodies buried in that cemetery, mostly Ephraim's descendants. Thomas was a first lieutenant in the War of 1812, sailing out of Bristol on the privateer Yankee, according to Selim Peabody's Peabody Genealogy, 1909. I've not found verification of this service. He would have been 22 years old. Thomas H. Peabodie, widow Sarah, is also listed as a private in Major Wood's State Corps, Roll Box 161, Roll Exct 602, in the War of 1812. He served in Capt. John Gladding's Company of R.I. Militia. His tombstone mentions military service. More info about the latter is apparently available on an Ancestry CD. American of March 17, 1820, listed Thomas Peabody as marrying Sarah Peabody of Middletown at Newport. Patriot of March 18, 1820 mentions Thomas and Sarah Peabody of Middletown. Phenix of March 24, 1820 carried story also. Date needs to be checked. Newport Mercury indicates Thomas married Mrs. Sarah Peabody; R.I. Republican of March 15, 1820, p. 3, has Mrs. Sarah Peabody of Middletown marrying Thomas Peabody. Was Sarah first married to another Peabody? That Francis West Peabody was born January 18, 1816, four years before Thomas and Sarah were married, could add credence to this theory. A Francis G. West was born in Bristol in 1815 of Francis and Sarah West, per ancestry.com. But it's not clear why Sarah, or Sarah and Thomas, would name a child after Francis West. Thomas Peabody appears in the 1820 Census for Bristol with a household including what appears to be 2 males and 4 females. Sarah Slocum is on the same page with 3 females. There's an off chance that Thomas is the son of John b. February 5, 1766, in Providence, son of Ephraim (1736-1787), son of John Pabodie, son of William. This John may not be mentioned in the Peabody genealogy -- apparently only 3 of Ephraim's 12 children were mentioned. Ephraim was a housewright in Providence, death in 51st year mentioned in Prov. Gazette and Chronicle, also deaths of daughters Lucy and Sally. Ephraim Peabodie born December 9, 1736 (alt. Nov. 19, 1746) in Little Compton., married Jennie Compton May 5, 1765. Son? Ephraim married Lydia Ellis abt. June 28, 1794, had a son John born 1798, d. Oct. 3, 1821, in Prov., altho of Norwich, NY. Children: John, William, Ephraim, Joseph, Elizabeth, Cynthia, Alden, Lucy, Sally...? Check further. Along this line, there was a Thomas E. Peabodie, 65, in the 1880 Census for New York, living in New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY, with his wife Julia, 63. This Thomas' parents were born in RI, although he was born in NY. An Ephraim, born in RI abt. 1771, was living with wife Sally, b. abt. 1796 in CT, in Norwich, Chenango Co., NY, in the 1850 Census. A Thomas Peabody was born 7 September 1797 in Stonington, New London Co., CT, married Phidelia Shattuck 7 April 1825 in Springwater, NY, and died 13 January 1883 in Washburn, Woodford Co., IL. He was the son of William Peabody and Rebecca Brown, grandson of Thomas Peabody and Ruth Babcock. It is noteworthy that some of the Stonington Peabodies also went to NY. Rhode Island Deaths, 1630-1930, lists an unnamed child Peabody as dying 5 September 1820, age 9 mos., Kin 1 Thomas Peabody, Kin 2 Stonington CT Palmer. "Palmer" may have been the recorder of births, as the name appears often. (But why Stonington?) There was a Thomas Peabody family, husband between 26 and 45, wife between 26 and 45, one boy under 10, one girl under 10, living in Bristol in the 1820 Census. An older woman was living with the family. Would the older woman be Deborah, wife of John Pabody? His death record in RIVR lists his name spelled Peabodie, his parents as John and Abbie Peabodie, his age at death as 77 years, 5 months, 21 days; birth in Portsmouth, occupation farmer living on Bristol Neck, cause of death cancer of the face. The Arnold Collection mentions a letter from the Third Church of North Stonington, CT, dated September 22, 1867, releasing Thomas H. Peabody from membership, just after Thomas died. See also "The Pabodie Family: Historic Origin of the Name of Peabodie," 1867, Benjamin Franklin Peabody. This book stops with John Peabody, grandfather (?) of Thomas, for lack of further information. #443 - Peabody Genealogy, 1909, gives father as Jeremiah Peabodie. This disagrees with RI Vital Statistics Cit., where parents of Thomas Peabodie were John and Abbie Peabodie (note spelling of Peabodie)(Bk 67, page 848, ct 2; Also Newport Co. Births from Death Records). There was a John Peabodie born August 28, 1775, probably in N. Stonington, CT, son of Thomas Peabodie, b. 3 Nov 1727 in Little Compton and Ruth Babcock, b. 1735, m. 16 Aug 1761. It seems unlikely that Thomas H. Peabody was born when his father was 15. The Peabody Genealogy by Selim Hobart Peabody (Boston: Pope, 1909) has a separate section on the Pabody line, of which Jeremiah is no. 20, "born about 1760, married --- Huddy. He was a cooper, resided at Newport, children: 41. i Charles 42 ii Thomas Huddy, b. abt. 1797." John Pabody had a brother, Thomas, who married Ruth Babcock and settled in Stonington, CT. This Thomas had 13 children, including a Thomas who had only one child, Prudence, born in 1791, and a John b. August 28, 1775 who married Susan Maxson in 1797 and had two children, both girls, Olivia and Jerusha, according to the Peabody Genealogy. A John Peabody was born in Middletown May 19, 1758 - parents Joseph and Barbara (Arnold Collection). Joseph b. Nov. 9, 1735, was the son of John Peabody of Newport and Dorcas Sweet. Joseph and Barbara also had Caleb, Benjamin, Mary, and Dorcas. A John Peabody of Middletown died September 23, 1809, in his 52nd year (born 1757 or 1758). (Bristol Phenix of 1809.) This may have been the same John Peabody. He is buried in the Peabody lot on Green End Avenue at 3rd Beach Road, 200 ft. North of telephone pole 1320 in Middletown. The only other Peabody mentioned who is buried there is Lydia, 1819 to March 3, 1840. A John Peabody of MIddletown had letters at the Newport Post Office in 1820. A John Peabody, age 31, apparently in the military, died in TN in 1821. A John Peabody married Abby Austin 11 September 1831, far too late to be relevant. A William Peabodie and Henrietta Gladding (d. 9 July 1803 at age of 31) married April 5, 1794 (William was a son of Ephraim of Providence). Gazette has article about William Peabodie, d. 23 January 1829, twice married, 12 children. Easton Peabodie of Middlebtown m. Soressa Thompkins of Little Compton 13 August 1840. A John Peabody, son of Joseph and Sarah, was born in Newport December 12, 17xx. A John Peabody married Dorcas Sweet, both of Newport, January 6, 1735 (Arnold Collection). There was a John Pabodie in 1770's in Middletown who testified that he had worked for Philip Smith in 1776 and was a witness to a will in 1782. This John would have been older than Jeremiah. There was a John Peabody family of 5 boys under 10 and parents (?) in Middletown in the 1800 Census. Also there were Joseph, Caleb, and Benjamin Peabody families. There was another Thomas (B.) and Sally Peabody in Newport at the same time as "our" Thomas and Sarah. CD 215, RIVR;s 1600-1900, lists two births of Thomas and Sally: Eliza, born 28 April 1820, died 19 November 1866, and a Sarah Matilda Peabody b. September 29, 1826. She died January 30, 1887, widow of Mr. William P. Braman, who d. May 28, 1871 at Rocky Point, RI. They had a daughter Sarah Maltilda Braman b. 1858, m. Lewis, d. May 4, 1928. These dates conflict with those of children of "our" Thomas and Sarah, so they're definitely different people. There was also a Lucy D. Peabody, dau. of Thomas and Sallie, b. June 1825, Newport, married Mr. Goddard, died March 8, 1888, no record in RIVR. Peabody Genealogy gives this Thomas as son of Caleb b. October 3, 1783, in Middletown, married (1) Elizabeth Melville of Newport, (2) Sally Bowler (RIVR). Lucy Sisson Peabody, a daughter, married Joseph D. Goddard. Thomas and Sallie had 11 children, including a Thomas Robert Peabody born in 1827. This family descended from John Pabody who came to Newport before 1640. He was probably related to William Pabody of Little Compton. Charles Peabody, of Abby, and Abby Browning, of George, m. April 1, 1806. His grave in the Old North Burial Ground, Bristol, offers no additional clues as to his parentage. The stones are flat on the ground near the Cushman graves about 200 ft. NE of the John H. Leonard plot. Thomas' gravestone reads "Thomas Peabody died August 16, 1867, aged 77 years. A soldier in the War of 1812." Next is the grave of Sarah Peabody, which reads: "Sarah Peabody, wife of Thomas Peabody, died March 13, 1880, in her 81st year." A nearby gravestone reads: "James W. Peabody, Died September 18, 1862, Aged 12 Years, 5 mos and 11 days." Another son, Alfred R. Peabodie (sic), is buried about 10 yards south of Thomas and Sally Peabody next to Willards. His stone reads: "Alfred Peabodie, b. October 12, 1823, d. May 19, 1907. A Soldier in the War of the Rebellion of 1864." The stone has an Odd Fellows set of three rings on it. His wife is also buried there: "Eliza R. Peabodie, born August 1831, died May 14, 1905." One hypothesis: His grandmother, Mary Stoddard Pabody Palmer, who d. 1822, was living in Stonington, CT, with some of the rest of the Peabody family there. There was also a large Palmer family in Stonington. Apparently, there was a Walter Pabodie of Providence who was into genealogy about 1900. According to Mrs. Charles L. Alden in "Elizabeth Alden Pabodie and Descendants (1897), the name Pabodie got changed to Peabodie "about this time" (1840's?). There may be something in Virgil D. White, Index to the War of 1812 Pension Files, p. 1400: "WC-35269, srv Lt H. Dyers' Co MA Mil as Pvt PEABODIE, Thomas H., Sarah, ... " Thomas' pension file was #20489. Sarah A. SLOCUM and Thomas Huddy PEABODIE were married on 17 March 1820 in First Baptist Church, Newport, R.I.. 11. Sarah A. SLOCUM was born on 29 June 1798 in Tisbury, Massachusetts.35 She died on 13 March 1880 at the age of 81 in Providence, RI.36 She was buried at Lot #1309 in North Burial Ground, Bristol, R.I.. Record of death in RI Vital Statistics, Book 80, page 980, ct. 2, lists her as Sarah Peabodie, daughter of Christopher and Sally, March 13, 1880. Bristol Phenix: "In this town, 13th last, Mrs. Sarah Peabodie, widow of the late Mr. Thomas Peabody, in the 83rd year of her age..." Sarah Peabodie, was "found dead in her bed last Saturday morning, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. George J. Smith (daughter Susan's husband), on William Street. We understand she had been in feeble health for several months, although she appeared as well as usual when she retired the night previous. It is though she died from paralysis, having had an attack some time since. She was in the 83rd year of her age. The funeral was solemnized from the residence of Mr. Smith, last Monday afternoon, Rev. Dr. Morrison officiating. The remains were conveyed to the North Burial Ground, followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends." Bristol Phoenix, Sat., 20 March 1880, page 2, col. 5. In the 1870 Census, she was living with John H. and Ann E. Leonard and family in Providence Ward 3. Marriage announcement in R.I. Republican, RI American Mar. 18, Patriot Mar. 17 all refer to her as Mrs. Sarah Peabody. Was she married to a Peabody before marrying Thomas? Was Frank West Peabody a son of this first marriage? Another genealogy lists her as Sarah Elizabeth McCall, but parents as Slocums. Was she married to a McCall and then Thomas? There were two Sarah Slocums born in Middletown, one to William and Mary April 5, 1786, the other to unknown parents March 9, 1786. Neither is this Sarah Slocum, but knowing there were two others around can avoid confusion. Children were:
