Eleventh Generation

1104. Roger CONANT409 was born before 9 April 1592 in East Budleigh, Devonshire, England. He died on 19 November 1679 at the age of 87 in Beverly, Essex Co. MA. He came from London to Plymouth in 1623 on the "Ann," moved to Nantasket in 1624, to Cape Ann in 1625, to Salem in 1626, and finally to Beverly. He was a salter by trade and apparently a citizen of London before he came to America. One source lists him as "First Governor of Massachusetts," as he was appointed governor or superintendent of the Dorchester project. He was governor until the arrival of John Endicott in 1628. His grandfather John was said to be of French (Norman) extraction. His ancestors for many generations had been at Gittisham, between Honiton and Ottery St. Mary's.

See "The Pilgrim Migration," pp. 134-143. There is also a genealogy of the Conant family: Frederick Odell Conant, A History and Genealogy of the Conant Family in England and America, 1887. Sarah HORTON and Roger CONANT were married on 11 November 1618 in St. Ann, Blackfriars, London, England.222
