In May 1637, with his friend Hatherly, he was appointed by Plymouth Colony to settle the bounds between it and Massachusetts Bay Colony, but they failed to reach agreement. All of Nathaniel's siblings remained in Tenterden, Kent, England, although Thomas may have come to Plymouth and stayed a couple of years.
