16. Hendrick KELLS was born on 12 June 1765 in Claverack, Columbia Co., NY. He died on 1 April 1833 at the age of 67 in Ghent, Columbia County, NY. He was buried in Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ghent, NY. Also referred to as Heinrich, Hendryk, and Hendrick Kels.

In the 1800 Census for Claverack, he is called Hendrick Kells and is listed next to John, Peter, and Elizabeth Kells. He had one boy under 10, one girl under 10, 2 males 25-44, and 1 female 25-44.

In the 1810 Census for Claverack, he is called Henry Kelse and has a family of 8: 1 boy to 10, 1 boy 10-16, 1 male 15-26, 1 male 26-44, 1 female to10, 1 girl 10-16, 1 16-24, 1 25-46. Listed next to Abraham Kelse, Philip Kelse, and Peter Kelse. The image for the 1830 Census is so bad as to be unreadable.

He joined Claverack Reformed church May 14, 1785. His brothers John and Jacob were members, as was his sister Maria. Margaret Margaretha Potts or BATZ and Hendrick KELLS were married on 5 February 1797 in Claverack Reformed Church, Claverack, NY.28

17. Margaret Margaretha Potts or BATZ29 was born on 3 April 1779 in Livingston, Columbia Co., NY?. She died on 5 June 1855 at the age of 76. Fred Potts m. Catherine Hagedorn at Germantown Reformed Church in 1752. George Potts (aka George Batz) m. Veronica Lasher/Lescher/Loesher in 1758 and had a daughter Margaret (this Margaret?). A Capt. Charles V. Potts b. 1790 buried in Hudson, NY. Potts was a reasonably popular family name in NY at the time.

The Dutch spelling comes out Potz or Batz. She was also known as Critje Patz (e.g., baptism of son Johannes/John in 1797).

The 1800 Census has a Hendrick Potts in Claverack, 16-25 and wife same, brother? There was a Hendrick Potts listed in nearby Livingston, Columbia Co., with 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44, and 1 female 45+. But there were also George Potts, William Potts, Jacob Potts, Lodewic Potts, and William F. Potts in Livingston, all with age ranges that would encompass Hendrick and his sisters. In the 1790 Census, Jacob, John, and William F. Potts were all listed in Livingston. Neither John nor William had families large enough to be the parents of Hendrick and his sisters.

They must have moved to Churchtown and later to Ghent, according to churchbook records.

Her sponsors were Dederick Schultheis and Margaret.

John H. KELLS30 was born on 14 October 1797 in Churchtown, Columbia Co., NY. He died in March 1833 at the age of 35. He was buried in St. Thomas Lutheran Cemetery, Churchtown, NY. Baptismal sponsors were John and Elizabeth Kells. He was baptized 19 November 1797 in the Dutch Reformed Church, Claverack. His baptismal name was Johannes. NYG&B Review 83:180.

Margaret Margaretha KELLS13 was born on 17 September 1802 in Churchtown, Columbia Co., NY. Her sponsors were William Lape and Margaret Weatherwax.

Henry KELLS31,32 was born on 25 May 1811 in Claverack, Columbia Co., NY.33 He died on 27 December 1892 at the age of 81 in Vernon, Waukesha County, WI. I've also come across the marriage date as May 31, 1830. He was baptized July 7th. Also called Harry.

Information on this branch of the family was from the Kells Family Bible, a transcription made by Edith R. Kells, sent to me by Wendy Negley in 2009.

First two children were baptized at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Churchtown, NY.

By the 1850 Census, the family had moved to Mukwanago, Waukesh Co., WI. All of the children are listed as having been born in New York. Henry and his son Henry were listed as farmers. In the 1860 Census, the children from Phoebe on were born in WI. In the 1880 Census, his wife is listed as Ella, but she's also listed as his daughter.

He left a will naming his children. Son William was the executor.

Katherine Eliza KELLS13 was born on 6 May 1813 in Churchtown, Columbia Co., NY.13 She died on 27 April 1894 at the age of 80 in Columbia Co., NY. She was buried in West Taghkanic Methodist Cemetery, Taconic, Columbia Co., NY. Or did she marry a Haner (Philip Kells' will)?

Dr. Robert KELLS13 was born on 19 June 1819 in Churchtown, Columbia Co., NY.13 He died on 23 April 1888 at the age of 68 in Jackson, Hinds Co., MS. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Jackson, Hinds Co., MS. This was the Dr. Robert Kells who was the Superintendent of the State Institution for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind in Jackson, Mississippi, during the siege of Jackson during the Civil War. Dr. Kells was from Claverack, Columbia County, New York. (Trevor McClean, 26 June 2002). He shows in the 1850 Census as being in Hinds, MS. In the 1880 Census, he was 60, a doctor, living in Hinds, MS, with his wife Minnie, 36. In the 1850 Census, he owned 12 slaves. In the 1860 Census, he owned 21.

He was 14 when his father died. His guardians were Jacob Rossman and Margaret Kells.

Robert, William, and others of the family migrated to the Mississippi Valley.

He was christened July 12, 1819, in Churchtown, Columbia Co., NY.
