Fourth Generation

36. Ruth Hoar LEONARD was born on 3 October 1807 in Massachusetts. She died on 2 January 1881 at the age of 73 in Brockton, Plymouth Co., MA. She was buried in Pleasant Street Cemetery, Raynham, MA. In the 1850 Census, she was living with her husband, George, and their family. In the 1860 Census, she was living with son Melvin G. and his wife in Dighton. In the 1870 Census, she was living in Taunton, "keeping house" apparently in the household of Liba Babbett. In the 1880 Census, she was living with son Daniel, Hannah, his wife, and Augusta Leonard, 19, their daughter.

The White Family Genealogy says that Ruth Hoar Leonard married first, Daniel Leonard of Norton; second, George Leonard, brother of Daniel, her first husband; Daniel and George were, perhaps, sons of James and Eunice (Smith) Leonard. The Lothrop and Field genealogies also have Daniel and George as sons of James and Eunice Smith Leonard. That's different from what's here: Daniel and George being sons of Daniel, who is son of Seth and Ruth Hoar. Which is correct?

When Ruth married George, she was listed as "of Easton." A Ruth Leonard, dau of Isaac Leonard of Easton, was born 22 Dec 1806 and is the wife of this George in some accounts..

Note that her sister, Dinah, married a Field (Stillman Field).

Ruth Hoar LEONARD and Daniel LEONARD were married on 8 December 1823 in Norton, Bristol Co., MA.37 Daniel LEONARD, son of Daniel LEONARD and Sibel DAVIS, was born about 1808 in Norton, Bristol Co., MA. Birth date from gravestone -- 23 at death in 1831. He died on 25 May 1831 at the age of 23 in Norton, Bristol Co., MA.37 He was buried in Winneconnet Cemetery, Bay Road (NE corner), Norton, MA. First husband of Ruth Hoar Leonard, per ECL. Brother of George? He was only 16 when he married?

Lois Badger in The Leonard Dictionary quotes Emma Burt, genealogist of Taunton, and the Franklin Pratt papers that Daniel was probably the son of James Leonard and Eunice Smith of the William Leonard-Sarah Bolton line. Others of this line are buried in Winnecunnet Cemetery. Note that there is conflict over the ancestry of Daniel and George Leonard.

Ruth Hoar LEONARD and George W. LEONARD were married on 3 April 1833. George W. LEONARD, son of Daniel LEONARD and Sibel DAVIS, was born in 1811 in Norton, Bristol Co., MA. He died on 2 September 1853 at the age of 42 in Raynham, Bristol Co., MA.38 He was buried in Pleasant Street Cemetery, Raynham, MA.39 George and Daniel are said by Lothrop "perhaps to be sons of James Leonard and Eunice Smith (James 2, William 1). Same in Field Genealogy. Sutton VR's show a marriage of September 2, 1805 of a Daniel Leonard and Sibyl Davis of Douglas. Which Daniel?

He was a farmer living in Raynham at the time of the 1850 Census, which lists his children: Cordelia 13, Melvin 11, George E., 9. He was called George W. Leonard in the marriage record of his son Joseph to Laura Goff.

There's another George W. Leonard born in 1810, d. 2 Sep 1852 -- think there's an error here. That George is the son of Job Leonard and Susannah Wilbur, rather than James Leonard and Eunice Smith or Daniel Leonard and Sibel Davis.

According to Raynham VR, he died of consumption (TB).
