He died on 5 November 1886 at the age of 74 in Peterborough, Hillsborough Co., NH. At the age of 18, he went to Methuen, MA and later removed to Lowell, where he was engaged in the manufacture of extracts and friction matches, under the firm name of Goodwin & Leonard, one of the first to manufacture friction matches. Later he resided in New Ipswich, NH, where he held the office of Deputy Sheriff and afterwards became Postmaster of the town during Buchanan's administration. In 1862 he removed to Boston, where he lived until a few months before his death. John Gilman LEONARD and Lucinda THOMAS were married on 4 February 1835. Lucinda THOMAS, daughter of Stephen THOMAS and Sylvia M. LEET, died on 30 August 1837. John Gilman LEONARD and Lucinda THOMAS had the following children:
