1560. Benjamin LEONARD was born on 15 December 1816 in State Line Rd., East Palatine, OH. He died in 1881 at the age of 65 in Fostoria, Hancock Co., OH. Benjamin sold his father's land along State Line Road near East Palestine, OH. He had expanded it to 156 acres from100 acres before selling and moving across OH to Hancock Co., in 1856. In this area, coal had long been taken from the ground for domestic use, but the neighboring farmers later benefitted from the unusually large deposits. He also benefitted -- he sold 156 acres for $7922, a very high price in those days, to a coal speculator. In the 1860 Census, Benjamin was living in Washington twp., Hancock Co., OH, with his family. He owned real estate worth $10,800. His father, Isaac, was living with the family. Benjamin, after farming southeast of the market and railroad town of Fostoria, sold and bought another farm on the north edge of that town. He developed his land into two commercial additions and two residential additions to the town. He became very wealthy and built a mill and an opera house. Benjamin LEONARD and Eliza CRUM were married about 1840. Eliza CRUM was born about 1815 in OH. She died in 1881 at the age of 66 in Fostoria, Hancock Co., OH. Benjamin LEONARD and Eliza CRUM had the following children: 2709 | i. | Isaac LEONARD was born on 27 July 1839 in East Palestine, OH. He died on 28 January 1863 at the age of 23 in Jackson, Mississippi. Isaac W. Leonard enlisted as a 22 year old Corporal in Company H, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1861, mustering into service August 30, 1861. He took part in the battles of Shiloh and Corinth before he was wounded and captured December 31, 1862 at the battle of Stones' River. He died of his wounds while still a prisoner of war January 28, 1863 at Jackson, Mississippi and is buried there. Letter: Hancock Jeffersonian: November 1, 1861 In the Civil War, he was a soldier in Company H, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He died in January 1863 in a Confederate prison in Mississippi of neglect of a shoulder wound received at Battle of Stones River. His diary is at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, OH. | 2710 | ii. | John C. LEONARD was born in 1842 in OH. He died in 1864 at the age of 22 in Pickets Mill, GA. He was buried in National Cemetery, Marietta, GA. He was killed in 1864 at the Battle of Pickets Mill, GA, buried by Rebels on battlefield.
