The family went to Delaware Co., OH, in 1854. James was educated in the public schools there, remaining at home until 1864 when he went to Leavenworth, KS, for a year. He then returned to Ohio and was employed in various clerical capacities at Larue. He then went into business in the dry goods firm of Hopkins and Leonard at Larue. Some 20 years later he established the private bank under the name of the Larue Bank Company. He became cashier and subsequently vice president, continuing in that capacity until his death. He assisted in the organization of the Larue Telephone Co. and for years was its president. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of BPOE, and the Knights of Pythias. William McKinley campaigned at Larue, speaking to a crowd and then ate at the home of James H. Leonard.
