William never knew his parents, left at an orphanage as a small baby. At three he was taken in by the Benjamin K. Wheeler family. He enlisted 9 Feb 1864 in Co. K, 6th Michigan Cavalry. He fought at Yellow Tavern, Meadow Ridge, Milford, Haw's Shop, Baltimore Crossroads,Cold Harbor, Trevallian Station, Summit Point, Opequan, Luray, Port Republic, Mount Crawford, Woodstock, and Sailors Creek. He was present at Appomattox when Gen. Lee surrendered. He later served in Kansas and Utah. He was wounded at Little Blue, NE. They lived in Sunfield, MI. |
