He served as a militia man guarding Sackett's Harbor, NY, against attack by the British. Sackett's Harbor Fort was located at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River where it enters Lake Ontario. Controlling the lake depended upon controlling this Fort. On 29 May 1813 a British amphibious force of 800 men attacked the American forces of 600 at the Fort. There were heavy casualties, but the Americans won. Afterwards he served as a teamster in the War of 1812. Where he and his brothers initially settled was in the wilderness near a place called Newport on the Oak Orchard Road. Later it was crossed by the Erie Canal and the name changed to Albion. Ephraim C. LEONARD and Mercy WICKHAM were married on 17 December 1823. Mercy WICKHAM, daughter of John WICKHAM and Lucy BROWN, was born on 25 June 1801 in Ontario, Canada. She died on 2 November 1882 at the age of 81. She was buried in Mt. Albion, NY. Ephraim C. LEONARD and Mercy WICKHAM had the following children:
