The most remarkable for activity of intellect, accumulation of learning not only in the law but in many of the ancient and modern languages and exact sciences. He was exceedingly eccentric and finally had a melancholly end to his life... He habitually remained locked in his office which was always located as far as possible from the business center. He would scarcely ever admit clients when they called but would do so if the knocking was persistent enough. He would open the door to see who it was, begin with a volume of curses and end by making an appointment where he could consult and advise... In 1840 he went to Washington to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court. He displayed such a wealth of learning and ability that it attracted marked attention from the Court, bar, and statesmen of the day, especially eliciting from Chief Justice Marshall highest compliments. Upon his return he commenced to show marked symptoms of insanity. He died in an asylum in 1845. He was of medium hight, 5 ft. 8 inches tall, slender, boney, angular, dark complexion, dark hazel eyes, very nearsighted... He was eager, restless, impatient, and nervous, his voice was shrill, and when speaking excitedly rose almost to a scream. A good old Methodist describing him added "and Mr. Leonard swore just awful."
