From "The Life of Eliab Byram:" "Rev. Eliab Byram was sent from the East Bridgewater Parish to Harvard and was graduated with the Class of 1740, having studied Diviinity, and was admitted to the Gospel Ministry. He was ordained by the Presbyterian Church of New York and early gave promise of an able and fervent Preacher; he commenced his ministry in North Middlebury, MA. He made a journey to the Middle States in 1743 and settled in Mendham, NJ where he lived most of the time for about 8 years. About the time Eliab graduated from Harvard University, the noted evangelist, George Whitfield, came from Boston and its vicinity and held revival services. Eliab had heard Whitfield preach and was deeply impressed and interested by spirituality of his discourses and made an effort to get the Church at Bridgewater to invite Whitfield to preach for them. Eliab was stopped by the Rev. Angier, who with his mother utterly discountenanced Mr. Whitfield. Ebenezer Byram opened his barn for the desired meetings. This was called the "New Light" movement by the opposition, and there was much opposition and and feeling engendered. This is claimed to have been the reason that led Ebenezer Byram, Sr., and most, if not all, of his children and their families and with relations by marriage and others to emigrate to New Jersey in ca. June 1744."
