He, Mary A., sons George T. 16 and Oscar L., 9, along with his mother-in-law, Abbie D. Leonard, 60, a nurse, and Henry M. Leonard, 24, a seaman, were living in Bristol, RI. At the time of the 1870 Census, James was a gardener with property worth $8500 and other assets worth $2200. He, Mary A., and George T., then 26, a bookkeeper, were living in Bristol, RI. At the time of the 1880 Census, James was 61 and retired, living with his wife Mary A. in Bristol, RI. He was one of three assessors of taxes for the Town of Bristol in 1881 (per 1881 City Directory). He was on the School Committee at the time of the 1884 City Directory and living at 58 State Street. At the time of the 1900 Census, James was 81 and living with his wife, Mary A., on State Street in Bristol. Abbie Ellis, 65, sister-in-law (Mary's sister) was living with them. Both of James' parents and Mary's mother were born in RI; her father was born in New York. They had been married 56 years and had two children, both of whom lived to adulthood.
