Priscilla LEONARD and Rev. Dr. William MCKINSTRY were married on 27 November 1760 in Norton, Bristol Co., MA. Rev. Dr. William MCKINSTRY was born on 8 October 1732. He died about 1776 at the age of 44 in Boston Harbor, Suffolk Co., MA. He had a successful medical practice in Taunton, although he had a feeble constitution and a consumptive habit. In 1774 a Capt. Gilbert, suspected of Tory (Loyalist) principles, was seized and so roughly handled by the Sons of Liberty that he needed a surgeon to dress his wounds. He protested having a rebel doctor, but agreed to Dr. McKinstry to dress his wounds. That act excited suspicions against the amiable and popular physician. He became exposed to insult and injury. Being in feeble health and of a sensitive nature, he thought it wise to retire to Boston. His family, which was left in Taunton, was now subject to increased annoyance. His wife was compelled by a large collection of females to march around the liberty pole. The family, thus insulted, was forced to become loyalists in self-defense, and they immediately went to Boston.

He became a Loyalist, was appointed surgeon general of the hospitals in Boston by General Gage, and died on a transport in Boston Harbor at the time of the evacuation, leaving his wife and 8 children. They went to Halifax, then to New York, then to Rhode Island where they were captured. They later lived in Haverill. One of her sons accompanied his uncle, Judge Daniel Leonard, when he went to Bermuda.
