2730. Horatio LEONARD^{2562,2563,2564} was born on 10 July 1816 in Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA.²³⁵⁵ He died on 4 July 1880 at the age of 63 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. He was a grocer, later a merchant and occupied Hathaway's works at the corner of Fifth Street and School Street in New Bedford, making oil and candles. At one time the Leonard family were manufacturing about one-tenth of the sperm and whale oil imported into the United States.

Horatio LEONARD and Emeline Hardwick TOBEY were married on 29 November 1838 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. Emeline Hardwick TOBEY, daughter of Jonathan TOBEY and Hannah SEARS, was born on 23 May 1818 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. She died in 1897 at the age of 79 in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA.

Horatio LEONARD and Emeline Hardwick TOBEY had the following children:

4508	i.	Ellen Marie LEONARD²⁵¹⁶ was born in 1839 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. She died in September 1841 at the age of 2 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA.

4510	iii.	Stephen Henry LEONARD²⁵²² was born on 24 February 1844 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. He died on 19 October 1864 at the age of 20 in Battle of Winchester (Cedar Creek). He was buried in National Cemetery, Winchester, VA. His leg was shattered by the explosion of a cannon ball in the Shenandoah Valley. He was in the 3rd MA Cavalry. When his brother was drafted, he said he was an experienced soldier and better go in his place, which he did.
4511	iv.	Emma Jane LEONARD²⁵²³ was born on 25 May 1846 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. She died on 3 April 1917 at the age of 70.
4512	v.	Laura Ann LEONARD²⁵²⁴ was born on 9 April 1849 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. She died in 1922 at the age of 73 in Malden, Middlesex, MA. She was a much beloved and respected school teacher and principal in Malden, MA, schools.
4513	vi.	Alice Tobey LEONARD²⁵²⁵ was born in 1855 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA.
