2013. John Duncan LEONARD was born before 27 August 1811 in Williamsburg, Dundas County, Ontario, Canada. He died on 14 November 1871 at the age of 60 in Pine Grove, Van Buren Co., MI. The 1851 Census of Kingston Township, Ontario, shows the family as living on 48 acres, lot 4, concession 4 western addition,near Glendale, as did the 1861 Census. John purchased this 48 acre farm October 4, 1843. The price was 56 pounds, with Anthony Monahan taking back a 40 pound mortgage. They apparently moved to Kalamazoo County, Michigan, in 1870. They are shown as Wesleyan Methodists. John signed papers with an x, indicating he was illiterate. It was witnessed by his brother, Joseph Helmer Leonard.

In the 1870 US Census, John was a farmer living in Pine Grove, Van Buren Co., MI, with his wife Laura, 43, and children George, 16, Francis J., 15, Matilda, 14, Susanna 12, Elizabeth 8, and Mary 2.

John Duncan LEONARD and Laura Lucy BROOKS were married on 20 April 1845 in Ernestown, Ontario, Canada. Laura Lucy BROOKS was born on 14 December 1828 in New York. She died on 18 October 1908 at the age of 79 in Pine Grove, Van Buren Co., MI.
