Home Surname List Name Index Sources Email Us | First Generation1. Friedrich Karl LEONHARD was born on 8 August 1757 in Wurtemberger Hoff, Schwabisch Hall, Baden, Germany. He died in 1845 at the age of 88 in Bristol, Washington Co., VA. Frederick Leonard of Sullivan Co., East Tennessee was a private in Capt. Marshall's Company, Col. Stuart's Regiment in the Virginia line from 1776 to 1781. He received a pension based on his service in 1839. He enlisted in PA and was discharged in Trenton, NJ. He was living with his son, Henry, when he died in 1845. His original homestead was on the Gate City Highway west of the town of Bristol. In the Revolutionary War, he was attached by two Hessian soldiers and slew them both with is bayonet. He was pursued by other Hessian soldiers but succeeded in escapting by hiding in a cave. Later, in September 1780, the Revolutionary War came to the Southern Mountains. Major Ferguson of the British Army threatened to burn the crops and homes in this region and also threatened to hang the leaders. The "Over the Mountain" People" responded by raising a furious army. Having returned to VA, Frederick joined them. On 25 September 1780, this militia of the Watauga and Hoston Valleys at Sycamore Shoals of the Watauga River (Elizabethton) joined the Burke County militia -- this group became known as the "over the Mountain." On 26 September the men spent the night at Shelving Rock. On 27 September they crossed Roan Mountain in the snow. Here, two men deserted to warn Major Ferguson of the Patriot Army approaching them. On Oct 1 and 2, the men stopped to dry out. On October 3, the men caped beneath Marlin's Knob beside Can Creek and proceeded to Gilbert Town on October 4. On October 5 they went to Green River and the next day to Cowpens. On October 7th, with over 900 men (others had joined along the way) at about 3 p.m., the Over the Mountain Men went into battle at what now is known as Kings Mountain National Military Park, south Carolina. In a little over an hour, Major Ferguson was shot from his horse and killed, along with some 120 of his men. His entire command was captured. Major Ferguson was buried at the site. Kings Mountain was the beginning of a successful end to the Revolutionary War. Frederick's will was signed 24 Sep 1840. Friedrich Karl LEONHARD and Anna Maria BRAUN were married in 1776 in Sullivan Co., TN. Anna Maria BRAUN, daughter of Johann Michael BRAUN and Anna Juliana KARGER, was born on 28 March 1762 in Hanover, Lancaster Co., PA. She died in 1855 at the age of 93 in Washington Co., VA.
